Wild grass and reeds

Wild grass and reeds
coarsely whisper
There’s no water
Trees siphon the last from their own
fibers within
Their roots shriveled in pain.
The birds find puddles
though “puddles”
are not what they expect.
We humans pray for rain
as our sprinklers
water our sidewalks.
